Feature1 vs ChatPRD: a PRD writer vs a PRD grounded in your code

ChatPRD helps you write a strong PRD quickly. Feature1 writes the PRD against what your product already does, then carries it to the developer, the coding agent and the release.

What ChatPRD does well

ChatPRD is a popular AI tool for product managers, and it earned that. Based on its own website and pricing page as of October 2026:

  • Fast, well-structured documents. It drafts and improves PRDs, turns research into specs, and reviews product strategy.
  • Templates. Basic templates on the free plan, custom templates on paid plans.
  • Team writing. The Teams plan adds a shared workspace, real-time collaboration and comments on documents.
  • Integrations. Google Drive, Notion export and Slack on Pro, and Linear on Teams.
  • Documents for coding agents. Its MCP server lets AI coding tools list, read, search, create and update ChatPRD documents.
  • Price. A free plan, Pro at $15 per month and Teams at $29 per seat per month.

If you want a polished PRD quickly and the rest of your process already works, ChatPRD does that job well.

The core difference: the document, or the document plus your product

ChatPRD works from what you tell it: your prompt, your notes and your uploaded files. Its public documentation does not describe reading your code repository. So the PRD is as good as the context you bring.

Feature1 starts from the product itself. It reads your repository read-only and keeps a picture of what the product can do. When it writes a PRD, it first studies the codebase: what already exists, what can be reused, the gaps, conflicts with existing behaviour, and refactors that should land first. The PRD is written against that.

The second difference is what happens next. A PRD in ChatPRD is a document you hand on. In Feature1 the PRD is one step in a chain: it sits under an initiative from your strategy, it becomes user stories with acceptance criteria, those are assigned to a developer, the coding agent builds from them, and adoption and errors come back to the feature after release.

What Feature1 adds around the PRD

  • A codebase study before writing. What exists, what to reuse, gaps and conflicts, so the PRD does not describe something you already built.
  • Risks you can act on. A feasibility check lists each risk with its likelihood, impact and a mitigation, plus dependencies and a launch-readiness call.
  • Open questions with proposed answers. Each open question comes with an assumed answer and the evidence behind it, for you to confirm or change.
  • Strategy and roadmap above it. A one-page Product Strategy Narrative and a roadmap of initiatives built from the gap between the strategy and the product.
  • Delivery after it. Stories with acceptance criteria and estimates, assigned to a developer, read by Claude Code, Codex or Cursor over MCP, and reviewed against the criteria.

See the PRD generator and the roadmap generator for how each step works.

When to choose which

  • Choose ChatPRD when you mainly need to write good PRDs and specs fast, you like working from templates, and handing the document to Linear or Notion is enough.
  • Choose Feature1 when PRDs keep describing things that already exist, risks show up during the build, or the reason behind a feature is lost between the document and the code your agent writes.
  • Use both if your PMs already draft in ChatPRD. Feature1 can take the feature from there and run it through the codebase study, stories, the build and the release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Feature1 a ChatPRD alternative?

For writing PRDs, yes, with a different starting point. ChatPRD writes from the context you give it. Feature1 reads your repository read-only first, so the PRD starts from what your product already does, and then carries it into stories, the build and the release.

Does ChatPRD read my codebase?

ChatPRD’s public documentation, as of October 2026, describes documents, projects, templates and an MCP server for coding tools. It does not describe reading your code repository. Check ChatPRD’s current documentation for the latest.

Both have MCP. What is the difference?

ChatPRD’s MCP server lets coding tools read and update ChatPRD documents. Feature1’s MCP tools expose features, stories and acceptance criteria that were planned against your codebase and linked to your strategy, so the agent builds to approved criteria rather than to a document alone.

How much does ChatPRD cost compared with Feature1?

ChatPRD lists a free plan, Pro at $15 per month and Teams at $29 per seat per month on its pricing page as of October 2026. Feature1 has a 7-day free trial with no credit card; talk to us for team pricing.

Can I use both?

Yes. If your PMs already draft in ChatPRD, Feature1 can take the feature from there and run it through the codebase study, risks, stories, assignment and the build.
